1. Introduction
Vitamin C has many functions as a cosmetic ingredient, including skin lightening, promoting collagen synthesis and inhibiting lipid peroxidation. However, vitamin C is prone to oxidative discoloration, making it difficult to use in cosmetics. Therefore, more stable VC derivatives have been developed. Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate is a vitamin C derivative, it is also called fat-soluble vitamin C, esterified vitamin C. It is the most stable of all vitamin C derivatives.
2. Main Functions
2.1 Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate is much more stable than normal Vitamin C.
The reason why the prototype vitamin C has good antioxidant properties is that it has a [dienol] structure, which makes it very unstable and easy to change color.
As for VC-IP, two ultra-long isopalmitic acid structures are esterified with the hydroxyl groups above, and more exaggeratedly, the other two "innocent" hydroxyl groups also react together, becoming "octopus" structure.
Because of this, VC-IP has absolutely no antioxidant properties in vitro (it only works when it enters the skin). It can be stored at room temperature for 6 months, and its activity can be preserved for more than 85%.
Even if it is placed in the formula, as long as the pH is less than 6, high temperature has no effect. Whatever product you make, whether it is lotion, essence or cream, the adaptability is very good, much better than the prototype vitamin C.
2.2 VC IP has an excellent transdermal absorption
Many problems of vitamin C derivatives often do not come from stability, but their transdermal properties and whether they can be converted into real vitamin C in the skin, otherwise, even if they are stable, they can only be decoration.
As far as skin penetration is concerned, the prototype vitamin C does not perform well because it is a water-soluble substance, and cell membranes are generally lipophilic.
As an oil-soluble VC-IP, although it is large, it has better lipophilic properties due to the addition of a palmitic acid group.
2.3 It has anti-oxidation function
In in vitro cell experiments, such as collagen regeneration promotion experiments, DNA protection experiments, etc., the performance of VC-IP is excellent, no less than vitamin C.
In some indicators, it even exceeds vitamin C, which has a lot to do with its transdermal properties.
3. Applications
Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate is mainly used in cosmetic field.
Application notes:
3.1. The pH range during formulation is designed not to be higher than 6.0.
3.2. It is recommended to use chelating agents in the formulation as chelating agents are very effective in preventing discoloration.
3.3. Since contact with water may cause oxidation of ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate, add a surfactant with long-chain polyoxyethylene to stabilize the system and strengthen the interface film.
3.4. Avoid prolonged exposure to heat.
4. Flow Chart
2-Hexyldecanal reacts with L-ascorbic acid directly under the action of catalyst and oxidant to form ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate; after extraction, washing, drying, concentration, purification and other post-treatments, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate is obtained.
